FAQ
Questions and answers
The short version: it's free, it runs on your server, and your data stays there.
Is Fettledesk really free?
Yes! There's no paid tier today and no limit on people or tickets. You pay only for the server you run it on, which can be a computer you already have. In the future we may offer a premium tier with some extra advanced features, but everything Fettledesk does now will always stay free.
Can I use it at my school, business or charity?
Yes, including for commercial work. The licence (GNU AGPL v3.0) asks for things only if you change Fettledesk and offer the changed version to others: then you share your changes under the same licence, keep the credit, and call it something else. Running it unchanged for your own organisation asks nothing of you.
What do I need to run it?
Any machine that runs Docker: a small Linux server or virtual machine, or Docker Desktop on Windows or macOS. Fettledesk and its database together use about 280 MB of memory, so a server with 1 GB is enough for a small team. The database (PostgreSQL) comes with it.
Where is my data, and does Fettledesk send it anywhere?
Everything stays on your server. Fettledesk has no telemetry and never calls home. It only connects to services you set up yourself, such as your mail server, or Microsoft's sign-in service if you connect a Microsoft 365 mailbox. See the privacy policy.
Does it work without internet access?
Yes. Fonts, icons and every part of the app are served by Fettledesk itself, so it works on a closed network. You only need internet access to download it and for any email you connect.
Is it ready for production?
It's a pre-release. It's tested thoroughly and fine for evaluation and small teams, but single sign-on and two-factor sign-in arrive in 1.0, and data formats may still change before then. Upgrades carry your data forward. Read what's still to come.
How do I update it?
Back up first, then pull the new version and start it again. Fettledesk updates its database by itself when it starts. The upgrade steps and backup commands are in the README.
Can I move from Jira or another tool?
A Jira importer is coming in 1.0, for projects, issues, comments, attachments and people. Assets can be imported from a spreadsheet (CSV) today, and inventory tools such as Intune can send devices in directly.
Does it support single sign-on or two-factor sign-in?
Not yet; both come in 1.0. Single sign-on will work with Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta and other standard providers, and two-factor sign-in with authenticator apps. Until then, keep Fettledesk on an internal network, or behind a reverse proxy with its own sign-in.
Is there a hosted version?
No. Fettledesk is self-hosted only, so your data never sits on someone else's servers. We may implement a hosted option, if interest grows.
Is there a phone app?
Fettledesk works in the browser on phones and tablets, so there's nothing to install. Phones are best for checking and quick edits; planning work is more comfortable on a bigger screen.
What languages does it support?
English for now. Dates, times and numbers already follow each person's locale and the organisation's time zone. We plan to implement other languages in the future.
Where do I get help?
Ask in GitHub issues, which is also where bugs and ideas go. There's no paid support yet. For security problems, use the private security reporting instead.
Can I help?
Please do! Report bugs, suggest improvements, contribute code (see CONTRIBUTING), tell others about it, or support the project.
Who makes Fettledesk?
Fettle Software, an independent developer (stormhawkjordan on GitHub). Fettledesk isn't affiliated with Atlassian, Freshworks or any other vendor.
